Never forget your public library! If they don’t have the book in question, they can usually get it as an inter-library loan if it’s over a year old, or if it’s new you can put in a request to purchase it.

Oh, this sounds like a wonderful book. Reading this blog could be expensive! :) Not really, actually, as you have been a great source of good recommendations that have saved me money–helping me to narrow down to books I really want to read. Thank you Joanna for being a great screener!

Ginny, I’ve had trouble with understanding the “abide” concept too. And with the NIV’s “walk in the light” in this verse although that’s a bit easier to picture.

Thanks for pointing out the connection here — we’re already with Jesus and need only stay with Him, live with Him, not leave Him.

I like this. I struggled for a long time with Christ’s words that we needed to “abide” in Him. That was the KJV translation of the word. I didn’t know how to do that. How do you abide? Then the NIV came out, translating the word “remain”. It was a shaft of light to my understanding! All I had to do was “stay” where I was. Your use of that word is perfect in this case. We’re there already, if we’re in Jesus. All we have to do is stay there. Rest there. Not leave!

I used to love the Church of England liturgy as a child, where it says, “We have erred and strayed from your ways like lost sheep.” It goes on to lead the people in confessing that they have done what they ought not to have done and left undone those things that they ought to have done. Yes, I loved and related to those words, even as a child.
